Case Study II: Matthew (Year 10)

Matthew has been at the Cathedral School since he was in Year 4 and he is now in Year 10.  He had been previously in a primary School in the Vale of Glamorgan.

"I was in a good primary school, but when I was young I was really good at music and my parents wanted a school where I could develop my full potential.  A lot of my friends and their parents told me how good the Cathedral School is, and we had all heard about the School's reputation for music.  When I came in Year 4 I was worried that I would be seen as ‘the new boy'.  But everyone was really friendly and made me feel at home.  And the School was much better than I expected.  I soon learned to play the trumpet as well as the piano, and my singing went from strength to strength.  I was a chorister, and those years were a revelation to me.  I learned discipline and how to push myself beyond what I thought I was capable of."

Matthew has worked hard at his music and has studied hard at the same time.  He has also been a member of the U14 Rugby and football teams, and has competed for the School in athletics competitions in track and field events.  His favourite subjects are Music, History, RS, Drama and English.

But the real highpoints for him came with the Choristers: the tours to Milan in 2004, Prague in 2006 and Paris in 2007.

How would Matthew sum up life at the Cathedral School? "We work hard and play hard!"

Matthew plans to go to university in London, and has not yet decided whether he will try to break into West End acting or become a sports journalist.
