Rowing

The long term aim of the Cathedral School, is to provide opportunities for boys and girls to participate in and excel at one of the most exhilarating sports in a competitive, yet safe and enjoyable environment.

The benefits of rowing at the Cathedral School are many. As well as providing the physical benefits of exercise in the fresh air, rowing as part of a crew develops a team spirit. The rowing programme has been in existence for several years, and we are now at a stage where we can aspire to produce competitive crews from pupils in year groups (9-11).

The sport is currently an option on offer in all three terms to Years 9-11, but sometimes the weather during the Michaelmas term can restrict the amount of rowing undertaken due to river height. We then revert to land based training.

The school is very fortunate to have forged strong links with Llandaff Rowing Club. The River Taff is just a five minute walk from the school and this is where Llandaff Rowing Club is based. The boathouse opens out onto the Taff.  The Cathedral School is lucky enough to be able to use an ever increasing fleet of training and racing boats, from singles to eights as well as excellent facilities for training off the water, including a rowing tank, ergo meters and a gym.

The School's Rowing Squads include the J14 crews. This is the beginners squad. The emphasis on J14's is to establish waterman ship. Our J16's are expected to show great commitment, when the training becomes more intensive. Our coaches are ex-international oarswomen. Several of our boys have competed at a National level.

At the beginning of Autumn 2008 we tookownership of our first ever boat, and employed the talents of a professional rowing coach. This will further enhance the development of rowing as a sport at the school.
