Core Themes: Achievement (Sport)

"Sport is like life. It teaches work, sacrifice, perseverance, competitive drive, selflessness, and respect for authority." - Vince Lombardi

Sport is important as a key to health and fitness, a means of learning team work and fair play, and a route to developing pupils' confidence and self-esteem. In sport we learn how to play, how to win and, just as valuable a lesson, how to lose graciously.

Both girls and boys have opportunities to play a wide variety of sports, though the dominant sports (for boys) are rugby, football, cricket, and (for girls) hockey, netball, rounders. Both boys and girls engage in tennis, rowing and athletics. Other sports are also taken seriously, including chess and cycling, swimming and fitness training, rock climbing, skiing, squash, and badminton.

All pupils are encouraged to participate and develop their athletic skills. Those who have particular talent are stretched and engaged in competitive play - many pupils are selected for County or National teams. Thus we seek to encompass both inclusion and excellence in our approach to sport. A significant amount of curricular time is spent on PE and Games, indicating the high priority the school attaches to sport. PE is available as an examined subject in the Senior Section. Coaching is provided by members of the teaching staff supported by expert coaches in a variety of sports from Cardiff's excellent sporting community.
