Core Themes: Achievement (The Arts)
"All Art is born of the observation and investigation of nature." - Cicero
The Cathedral School has long been known for the excellence and variety of its music. There are a plethora of orchestras, ensembles, choirs and groups, along with opportunities for solo performance. Specialist teaching is offered in 20 different instruments. Pupils of all ages participate in Music enthusiastically, drawing from it inspiration and enjoyment. Through skilful teaching, disciplined practice and regular recitals and performances, pupils develop very high levels of musical proficiency. Associated Board examinations are taken, with consistently impressive results, numerous pupils attaining Grade 8 standard.
This is the only Anglican choir school in Wales. Both boys and girls have the opportunity to audition to become Cathedral choristers; our pupils lead choral worship in Llandaff Cathedral daily during term time and on the major festivals. Those who become choristers enjoy an unparalleled choral education.
In Drama pupils develop confidence and creativity. Regular performances drawn from different genres develop pupils' skills in performance as well as their understanding of literature and technical theatre skills. Many pupils are members of the National Youth Theatre.
Art is explored to a very high standard and through a variety of media, supported by regular visits and projects with artists in residence. Pupils produce art both for enjoyment and for exhibition, learning to see the world through different eyes and with the patience needed to produce work of technical quality.
