Music

Music is very strong at the Cathedral School with eight choirs and sixteen formal instrumental groups catering for all levels of ability and musical preference. The groups give frequent concerts both inside and outside the School and all pupils are given plenty of opportunity to perform, whether as soloists or as members of an ensemble. On the academic side, GCSE is taught off the timetable (enabling all who wish to, to take the subject) and up to half of all pupils take the examination as an extra to their other GCSEs. Most pupils obtain A* or A and the few who do not rarely go lower than a B.

In all that we do in the School, the accent is on pupils enjoying what they do and having a pride in producing work of a very high standard. To this end, membership of all groups is optional and pupils are able to leave them at any time if they have other commitments which clash with music. Some ex-pupils have gone on to work professionally in music, including Edward Jones, organist at Harvard University Chapel, the singer Zoe Willis and Charlotte Church.
