Orchestras and instrumental ensembles
Instrumental music is particularly well provided for at the Cathedral School, with a very wide range of opportunities on offer for musicians of all tastes and experiences.
In the early stages, orchestral work is undertaken in small groups in order to enable more personal help to be given to our younger pupils. Camerata, Sinfonietta and Sinfonia are available, with Camerata catering for virtual beginners who frequently have parts written for them to ensure that they can participate with confidence and enthusiasm in the work of the group. The younger pupils progress through these smaller ensembles until they are skilled enough to join one or more of the senior groups. As they enter the Senior School, the groups become bigger and pupils are given opportunities to tackle increasingly challenging and substantial repertoire. The Groups at this higher level include the Senior Orchestra, Flute Ensemble, Jazz Band, Senior Percussion Ensemble, Early Music Group, Cathedral Brass, Pop Ensembles and Trumpet Ensemble.
