Infants (Ages 4-7) Curriculum
In the Infant department we cover the curriculum in line with the National Curriculum. However, we are not bound by this and are able to broaden the range of subjects, increase relevance and deepen understanding wherever possible. Alongside the usual subjects of English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, RS, ICT, Art and DT, a second language is introduced in Year 1. Specialist teachers deliver Drama, Music and PE lessons.
We base the children's learning on traditional methods, particularly in literacy and numeracy where we aim for and achieve high standards. We are also able to use the best of the latest ideas and believe that active learning, play, first hand experience and lots of exciting resources are all essential to successful learning.
Each child's progress is carefully monitored. Various assessment methods are used throughout the three years to inform the teaching the children receive. These assessments also allow us to identify any problems or areas that need extra support. A Learning Support Co-ordinator works in the department and in co-operation with a specialised teacher and the Special Needs Co-ordinator. Children may receive a range of support, from individual attention from the teaching assistant or teacher, to group work or individual lessons. This support may last for a few weeks, a term or a year but is tailored to provide the level of support needed, working with parents.
While we use a number of well known schemes such as the Oxford Reading Tree, Nelson English and Heinneman Maths, these are supplemented with work specifically designed by the experienced and well qualified staff to cater for the abilities and interests of the children within each year group. This enables every child to work at his/her own level and building on individual strengths and personal experiences. We aim to challenge the children, to excite and interest them, whilst supporting them appropriately so that they are happy, confident and motivated learners.
