Rugby Football
The Cathedral School is renowned for its quality in rugby. It is one of the three major boys' sports and competitive fixtures are generally played in the Michaelmas Term. The teams fielded from under 9 level through to 1st XV have enjoyed great success through the years. The rugby coaching is of the highest standard and each team has its own coach, assisted by specialist forwards and backs coaches throughout the season.
On average, the school teams enjoy approximately an 85% victory rate against independent and state school opposition. Success has also been gained on a national level with an appearance in the 2007 Rosslyn Park Sevens final.
Many of our players have progressed beyond school and club level to play at representative rugby for Cardiff Schools', Cardiff Blues or the District. Some have further progressed to gain full international honours.
Girls also enjoy rugby at the Cathedral School. In their first year of playing the game, the U14s reached the final of the Cardiff Schools' Women's Rugby Tournament.
Each squad member is expected to attend lunchtime and co-curricular training sessions, not only to hone skills, but also to continue developing the qualities of cooperation, integrity, sportsmanship, endeavour and leadership - the traditional principles that the School aims to promote.
Pupils have the opportunity to switch codes and play rugby league. This has developed into a very popular and successful addition to the sporting curriculum.
