Following the success of last week’s A Level results, pupils at The Cathedral School, Llandaff are celebrating another excellent set of GCSE results with almost half of all grades at 9 or 8 (equivalent to A**/A*) and 70% of all grades at 9-7 (A**/A).
The most common grades were 8 and 9, the equivalent to A**/A* with 99% of all grades at 9-4 (A**-C).
Three pupils gained all grade 9s (A**) - Academic and Music Scholar and former girl chorister, Elizabeth B, Academic Scholar, Sara K and Sixth Form Academic Scholar, Salma A. All three pupils were thrilled with their results and will join the Cathedral School Sixth Form next month.
Elizabeth, who will study Biology, Chemistry, English Literature and Mathematics said: “I’m really happy and so glad that the work I put in paid off. I’m really thankful to all of my teachers and friends for their support. I’m looking forward to the change that sixth form will bring, as well as meeting new people and being able to study what I’m most passionate about.”
Salma A added: “I’m so relieved and I’m grateful for the support that everyone receives here – I love the sense of community. I’m excited to start the next chapter of my Cathedral School journey, taking Biology, Chemistry, Spanish and Religious Studies.”
Sara K will also study Biology and Chemistry, alongside Mathematics and Physics, and said: “I’m so happy and so proud of myself - it’s testament to how hard I’ve worked and how much the teachers have encouraged me to do my best. I’m looking forward to the independence of sixth form but also the challenge that comes with preparing for university.”
Seven pupils achieved grade 8s and 9s including youth advisor for the Children's Commissioner of Wales, Hannah A, British Taekwondo silver medallist, Phoebe B and Max C-T who was part of the CSL team who became national champions in this year’s Cardiff University Life Sciences Challenge Quiz. Joining them are Academic Scholar and public speaker, Amog M-B, U16 Cardiff South and Schools rugby player, Cameron H and Academic and Music Scholar, Samuel C.
Head of The Cathedral School, Mrs Clare Sherwood said: “We are enormously proud of our Year 11 pupils who have worked with dedication and positivity throughout their studies. We are delighted to celebrate not only their academic achievements but also the skills and character they have developed during their time here. Congratulations to all of them!
“Pupils achieved extremely well across the board, with 75% 9-7 (A**/A) in Biology, Chemistry, Drama, Geography, History, Music, Physics and Religious Studies. Our value added results were also exceptional with Mathematics adding at least one whole grade of value to every child. Thank you to our outstanding teachers who inspire each child to exceed their expectations and achieve their very best.
“It will be wonderful to welcome our new Year 12 students, including those joining us from other schools who are attracted by excellent results, small class sizes, extensive co-curricular opportunities, strong emphasis upon preparation for top universities, and supportive pastoral care.”
This year, the Cathedral School’s A Level students have progressed to the most selective and sought after universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, London School of Economics, UCL, Bristol, Exeter, Cardiff and Nottingham with success in a wide range of fields from medicine to law, economics to media and music to modern foreign languages.
