The time had come once more for the annual Springtime Serenade Jazz Café event, this year however, with a twist. The theme of the concert being a journey through space, changing the name to the Space-Time Serenade. Year 12 Pupil Poppy B-E acted as the event’s narrator as Jazz Band and guests guided the audience through a journey through the stars. Telling the story of the crew of the Orion 4, the event had a mix of jazz standards, disco and pop, starting with Gunna Fly now, and as the piece developed, we heard pieces such as Levitating, Moondance and Complicated and finished with the fiery re-entry to earth, accompanied by Hot Stuff.
Joined by guest performers, including Eva H (performing Elton John’s Rocketman), Aidan B (performing his own Jazz Improvisation Composition), a sixth form band made up of Owen H, Oli P, Dan W and Aidan B (performing The Girl from Ipanema and Stella by Starlight, as well as the school’s double reed group (performing A weekend in England and the Can-Can).
The concert will be the last for our Year 13 Jazz Band performers: Annabel A, Henry T, Ed R-S, Jason W and new-member Owen H. Their hard work and commitment over the last few years has been integral to the band.
A different take on the concert this year with a story line and narration, but one that may return in future events.
