Walk like an Egyptian

Year 4 arrived at school looking pharaoh-nominal in their Egyptian outfits. Their day consisted of four immersive activities. The pupils wondered about what the Egyptians ate. Having discovered that they enjoyed flatbreads, they decide to give it a go themselves. Great fun was had mixing flour and water to make the dough, and rolling it out with a rolling pin. They then wood-fired their bread on the open fire in Forest School. Most enjoyable was the eating – they were quite delicious! While one group were creating tasty bread the others were creating their very own bookmarks using hieroglyphics. They enjoyed tapping into the expert knowledge of Mrs Scibona, who has previously worked in the Swansea Egyptian Centre and shared stories and facts about the ancient Egyptians. Pupils learned that Ancient Egyptians recognised people by their fabulous headdresses. Our young wannabe pharaohs learned all about the styles of hat favoured by the ancient Egyptian elites and then designed their own creations. The results would certainly turn heads on Llandaff High Street! The final activity saw Year 4 get creative with a fantastic papercraft ancient Egyptian mummy sarcophagus. Each pupil received three sheets, each with a 2D net that needed to be cut out, folded and made into a 3D shape. The end result saw pupils create a base and lid to their sarcophagus with a very scary mummy placed inside. As you can see, the pupils had a school day that will live long in the memory.
