EESW Sixth Form Project
08 October 2025
To mark the official launch of this year's Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) project, our Year 12 Physics students attended the Welcome Event at the University of South Wales this week.
The initiative connects students with industry professionals to solve real-world engineering challenges. The day began with a fascinating session on space engineering, where students learned about the growing importance of satellite technology and the exciting career pathways it offers. They also enjoyed a tour of USW’s impressive engineering facilities and gained insight into the wide range of opportunities available in the sector.
During the afternoon, students were given their project brief and met with a representative from the NHS, who will act as their industry partner. This year, both Cathedral School teams will be working on a civil engineering project focused on the sustainability, materials, energy consumption and production of a new cancer treatment hospital being developed in the Whitchurch area.
Over the coming months, students will explore real engineering data, visit the site, and learn about the complex challenges engineers face when balancing design innovation, environmental impact, and cost efficiency. This project provides an incredible opportunity for our students to apply their physics knowledge in a practical context, while developing teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership skills that will serve them well in the future.
