Gold Head's Award Visit to London

In recognition of having completed the whole Head’s Award Scheme, twenty one Year 10 pupils, all Gold Award recipients, went on a reward trip to London last weekend. Arriving in London in time for lunch, everyone enjoyed a meal in an Italian restaurant in Covent Garden. After walking down to the Embankment of the river Thames and under the watchful gaze of the London Eye, our party then enjoyed the view of famous London architectural monuments afforded us from the perspective of Tudor monarchs of old. Our river cruise allowed us to see both modern and historic buildings, cultural landmarks and also to wave to the many pedestrians crossing the numerous bridges we sailed under - every wave back it seems gaining us five years of good luck for the future! The morning after we were treated to a walking tour on the banks of the Thames through historic Rotherhithe. We witnessed commemorative bronzes to the ‘pilgrim fathers’, more accurately described to us as separatists, who left these shores to sail to the Americas in search of religious freedom four hundred years ago; and also learned about the great Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who was the first person to build a tunnel under London’s great river thus creating the foundations of what eventually became the London Underground. Pupils and staff had an excellent time! Many thanks to Fr Wayne and Mrs McMahon who came along also in support.
