How Do Fish Breathe Underwater?
This half term’s Big Science Assembly, explored the fascinating world of underwater life by learning how fish breathe.

The assembly began by exploring how the human respiratory system works - from breathing air into your throat, how the epiglottis directs it to the trachea, and how eventually the process of diffusion allows oxygen to move from the alveoli and into the cardiovascular system.

Through the use of clear and colourful diagrams, the pupils discovered the similarities with how fish gills work, and that fish take in water through their mouths and push it out through gill openings called opercular flaps. As the water passes over the gills, oxygen is taken from the water and absorbed into the fish’s body, while carbon dioxide is released.

Congratulations to Joshua A (Year 3) and Imogen D (Year 5) who were the winners for their wonderful essays describing this fascinating process. Our new question was asked by Gareth D (Year 6) who wanted to know, 'How Does Suncream Work?'
