Recalling the 'old school'

To begin the school's week of celebration marking the Jubilee (50 years) since the Cathedral School moved from Cathedral Green to its current campus, a launch party was held by the Llandaff Society for their latest occasional paper, ‘North of the Green Baize Door'. Written by former Latin master John Lewis, and former choral scholar John Prior-Morris JP MBE, the paper recalls the school on Cathedral Green with various anecdotes both about the school and about childhood in Cardiff in the post-war years.

Launching the paper, the authors contrasted today's Cathedral School - its extensive campus, the abolition of boarding and the size of the day-pupil cohort, the presence of girls as well as boys - with the Cathedral School of their own day, which sounded far more austere than now!

John Prior-Morris presented a picture of the former campus, entitled ‘Fifty Years Back', to the school (pictured are senior prefects receiving the picture, with John Lewis on the left and John Prior-Morris right).

Copies of the paper ‘North of the Green Baize Door' are available from the school priced £5.00, and small prints of the watercolour ‘Fifty Years Back' for £30 (unframed).
