Refugee Week

20 June 2025
Refugee Week
This year's Refugee Week celebrations have celebrated the incredible contributions that refugees make to our society.

Embracing the theme Community as a Superpower, the week was filled with meaningful activities that encouraged reflection and a strong sense of unity. Activities included:
  • Primary pupils dressing up as their favourite superheroes - a reminder that everyone has unique strengths they can use to support and uplift their communities.
  • Our inaugural Primary CSL Film Festival - a viewing of short films created by pupils, exploring refugee stories and kindness. Each class nominated a finalist, and their films were celebrated in a special assembly.
  • Welcoming Larysa Martseva, acclaimed Ukrainian filmmaker and recipient of the Welsh Refugee Council’s Volunteer of the Year Award, who judged the entries and offered thoughtful, encouraging feedback to our young filmmakers.
  • Hosting talks for our Senior pupils, who listened to Larysa speak about her personal story of escaping the war in Ukraine. She also introduced films created by young people at #Films4Teens, the film school she founded in Cardiff to give refugee and migrant teenagers a voice through storytelling.
Throughout the week, we raised funds for both Schools of Sanctuary and the Oasis refugee hub in Cardiff by selling limited-edition Moomin keyrings, bookmarks and badges, all beautifully crafted by the DT department and the Amnesty Team. The Moomins, beloved Finnish characters whose stories often explore themes of migration and belonging, were a fitting symbol for our fundraising efforts. Demand far exceeded supply, and sales have helped push our fundraising total to over £350 (and rising). In addition, the Amnesty Team organised a popular Guess How Much Stationery Is in the Jar competition, with the lucky winner taking home the jar of stationery.

Refugee Week was a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to learn about the refugee experience and to consider the vital role we all play in creating inclusive, compassionate communities. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped bring this important message to life.
