Track record for excellence at A Level continues at The Cathedral School

The Cathedral School continues its track record for outstanding results at A level, with its students achieving 45% of all grades at A* and 75% at A*-A, with 89% securing their first choice course and university.

The most common grade was A* with more than half of the cohort attaining exclusively A*/A grades. At AS Level, 85% of grades were A.

Jeswin SJ and Brychan T were among those who achieved the highest possible results, securing places at Cambridge University to read Medicine at Trinity Hall and Computer Science at St Catharine’s respectively. Jeswin scored 5A* and Brychan, 4A*.

Earlier this year, Jeswin became the first CSL student to achieve Gold in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s UK Olympiad, placing him in the top 10% of over 8500 talented chemists. On news of his results, Jeswin said: “I’m really pleased! My grades are the result of two years of hard work with excellent support from the School, my teachers as well as my peers. I will carry the School’s ethos with me throughout the rest of my life.”

Brychan has been a key member of the School’s Eco Team, helping them to devise strategies to improve sustainability. He added: “I’m really happy with my results and I couldn’t have done it without the help of my teachers and form tutor. I’m really looking forward to university life and new opportunities.”

Other top performers achieving four or more A* grades include Head of School and 1st XI Hockey Captain, Fflur H who will study Psychology at Birmingham; Ellie D who was awarded the Chief Scouts Personal Award this year and will read Chemistry at Manchester; Hugh J who will study Computer Science; Anastasia R who will read Law and Spanish at Bristol and Rosie T who will read Sociology at Bristol.

Accompanying Jeswin to read Medicine next term are: Rahul C, Tomos E and Nia B at Cardiff, Alice H at Birmingham and Heath W at Imperial College London.

Owen P, Head of School, Music Scholar and member of Only Boys Aloud has accepted a place to study Music at Cardiff. Ronan C will study Architecture at Nottingham. Last year, Ronan’s artwork ‘Midnight Drive’ was selected by the Royal Academy of Art for its 2021 Young Artists Summer Show. Gracie D will go onto Manchester to study Fashion Buying and Merchandising.

Congratulations to our 1st XV co-captains who have a great opportunity to continue their rugby development. Joe B has accepted a rugby scholarship to the University of Mary Washington, Virginia, while Jake J has signed a contract with Ealing Trailfinders Rugby Club as part of a scholarship at Brunel University London, where he will study Environmental Sciences.

Head of the Cathedral School, Mrs Clare Sherwood said: “We are absolutely thrilled that our students have attained such outstanding results and I was delighted to welcome them to school today to celebrate their achievements. The results are very strong across a wide range of subjects, including 100% A* in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Computer Science.

“This is a year group that embraces learning in all its forms. They are resilient, creative and a lot of fun. These wonderful results are a tribute to their willingness to grasp every opportunity and their ability to adapt and rise to any given challenge, but also a reflection of the support they have received from our incredibly hard-working teaching staff who know them so well. I wish them all the very best as they take the next step on their educational journey.”

The Cathedral School Sixth Form offers excellent facilities and teaching, combined with outstanding pastoral care, small classes and a breadth of co-curricular opportunities, especially in music, sport and the arts.
