Cardiff Scientific Society Lectures
14 October 2025
This half term, it has been wonderful to see our students engaging with the Cardiff Scientific Society lecture series, an outstanding opportunity to hear directly from leading scientists and researchers across disciplines.
The season began with Professor Robert Pickard’s thought-provoking Presidential Lecture, Science and Shakespeare. Blending literature and science, Professor Pickard explored how both disciplines shape our understanding of human nature and truth, reminding us that curiosity and creativity are central to all forms of discovery.
Next, Professor Sir Colin Humphreys from Queen Mary University of London presented Next Generation Ultra-Low-Energy 2D Semiconductor Materials and Devices Beyond Silicon. His talk offered a fascinating insight into the future of electronics, where graphene and other 2D materials could revolutionise technology and drastically reduce global energy consumption.
Finally, Dr Chris North, Reader in Physics and Astronomy at Cardiff University, delivered Gravitational Waves: Morning has Broken. His engaging talk captured the excitement of one of the most dynamic fields in modern astrophysics, from the first detection of gravitational waves to the discoveries now shaping our understanding of black holes, neutron stars and the structure of the universe.
It was fantastic to see our students attending these lectures, taking full advantage of their membership of the Society, and engaging so enthusiastically with the speakers. At the end of Dr North’s talk, students were keenly asking questions and learning about summer research opportunities, a clear sign of their growing scientific curiosity and ambition.
