This year’s eagerly anticipated House Singing competition, themed around Coldplay hits, saw the venue packed with an enthusiastic audience, thanks in part to the lifting of the upper limit for the main House Choirs.
With so much effort going into arranging, rehearsing, organising and conducting, House Singing now carries 200 House Points in total — 100 for the Main Choir and 100 for the A Cappella performances.
We were delighted to welcome back Old Llandavian Alex Maxted (OL, 2007-2016) as guest judge, who faced a difficult task choosing between so many outstanding performances. His message to those leading in future years was clear: “Presentation, presentation, presentation — the performance begins the moment you walk onto the stage and ends only when you leave.”
Alex praised the high standard of diction and delivery across the board, awarding Dyfrig first place in the Main Choir category for their seamless and engaging performance of We Pray. He gave particular commendation to conductor Katyayani R for her assured leadership and to the choir for their strong connection with her throughout. Teilo took second place, and Euddogwy came third in what was a closely contested category.
In the A Cappella competition, there was once again little to separate the top entries, though Euddogwy emerged as the standout winner with an enchanting rendition of Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight. Their performance displayed a lovely sense of cohesion and balance, reflecting clear growth and teamwork in recent years. Dyfrig took second place, with Teilo close behind in third.
The evening concluded with a reprise of both winning performances, following a surprise treat from the Staff Choir, who delighted the audience with Seasons of Love from Rent, joined by students Joe P and Emily H.
