Science Live: Biology Edition
Biology is about more than humans, plants and the occasional animal.

To help expand our Sixth Form Biologists' minds, and demonstrate the vast range of biological projects, ideas and careers, 35 pupils and staff headed to Science Live: Biology Edition in the Great Hall of Birmingham University. They enjoyed talks on coral reef regeneration techniques (including placing underwater speakers to attract fish to our newly transplanted coral); looked at comparative physiology of humans and primates (our noses go colder when under stress); visualised how to estimate the biodiversity of living things on Earth; reflected on the challenge of antibiotic resistance (it kills over 5 million people a year); and analysed the evolutionary purpose of laughter (and why laughter is contagious). To finish the day, they received exam tips from one of the UK’s most experienced biology examiners. Overall, it was an excellent opportunity to hear experienced biologists discuss their cutting-edge research work, and see the opportunity, creativity and passion that professional biologists have for their work and careers.
