Discovery Day
(Year 7 entry 2026 only)
Thursday 5 June 2025
Year 1 had the wonderful opportunity to visit St Fagans, explore Welsh history and deepen their understanding of how life has changed over time.
The day began with a tour of the Rhyd-y-Car cottages, where pupils spotted household items from the past and compared them to modern-day equivalents they had been learning about in class. A highlight of the visit was meeting Betti Bwt, who shared the story of wash day in years gone by. With plenty of laughter and enthusiasm, pupils helped Betti clean her Granny’s bloomers using a dolly and tub, washboard, and mangle, gaining a real appreciation for the effort involved in even the simplest tasks of daily life.
After a picnic lunch in the sunshine, the pupils explored St Fagans Castle and were amazed by its size and grandeur, sparking conversations about the differences between homes in the past and present. Back in the classroom, they wrote detailed reports of their experience, making great use of adjectives, punctuation and consistent handwriting. It was a joy to see how well they listened, remembered and reflected on what they had learned during their visit.
